Catherine's Traditional Yuletide Service of Carols Pays Tribute to Community Volunteers

Her Royal Highness has organised her customary Yuletide celebration at the historic Abbey, with a congregation comprising members of the royal family, famous faces, and community champions who have helped their communities.

The sizable congregation will hear a selection of festive songs, musical performances, and spoken word pieces from stars like Kate Winslet and Chiwetel Ejiofor.

A Theme of Kindness and Compassion

The theme of the concert, held in the candle-lit Abbey on Friday, is generosity and expressing affection towards one's neighbour.

Among the guests will be Anna and Jonathan Cordiner, whose young girl was lost to a brain cancer, and who founded an organisation, a support fund, to support families who have a terminally ill child.

"The dedication, empathy, and kindness you show, often without fanfare or recognition, and without any hope for reward or acknowledgement, make an remarkable change to the lives of others," the Princess expressed in a letter ahead of the festive gathering.

A Gradual Return

The royal has been undertaking her own gradual return to public life after her cancer diagnosis and chemotherapy, recently giving her initial major address in two years, in which she discussed recognising the "quiet, often invisible work of caring".

Performance and Potential

Attendees entering the Abbey will enjoy performances from young musicians supported by the Future Talent charity, set up with the help of the Duchess of Kent to widen access to instrumental training.

Trumpeter Carys Wood, 18, who is a trumpet player and is from southwest Wales, has been assisted by the organisation, with grants helping towards instruments, tuition, and transportation expenses - and she said it was "awesome" to be playing at tonight's service.

"Musical pursuits are frequently pricey," Carys said. She is now enrolled at the Royal Academy of Music, and added that "all people deserve the chance" to cultivate their performance abilities.

A Family Affair

Her younger sibling Eliza, aged 11, who plays the euphonium, will also be at the Abbey. "I never imagined I would perform in front of so many important people," she said.

Attending the service will be representatives of different generations.

That will include young Saphia Turner, nine, honouree of a youth community award, who sells artwork and carries out sponsored challenges to raise money for food banks.

Festive Decor and Performances

The Abbey has been adorned with specially made wreaths, with celebrity baker Mary Berry and floral designer Simon Lycett assisting in their creation.

Taking to the stage will be Katie Melua, the Westminster Abbey choristers and a maritime folk band from Cornwall, the group Fisherman's Friends, who said the chance to take part was "a dream come true."

The festive event titled 'Together at Christmas' will be televised and shown on a major network on Christmas Eve.
