The White House confirmed the start of federal worker layoffs on the end of the week, making good on earlier warnings linked to the ongoing US government shutdown, which is set to stretch into its third consecutive week.

Formal Statement and Initial Details

The director of the White House budget office wrote on a public platform that “reductions in force have begun,” indicating the government’s procedure for letting employees go.

While the official provided no details on which agencies were affected, a representative from the Treasury Department confirmed that notices had been issued within that agency. Additionally, a Department of Homeland Security spokesperson noted that layoffs would also occur at the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency. Also, a union for federal workers announced that members at the Department of Education would be impacted by the reduction in force.

Labor Reaction and Court Actions

Labor representatives warned that the layoffs would have “severe consequences” on public services relied upon by millions of Americans and vowed to challenge the actions in the legal system.

This is shameful that the administration has exploited the funding lapse as an excuse to wrongfully terminate thousands of workers who deliver critical services to the public nationwide,” said Everett Kelley, who leads the American Federation of Government Employees.

The largest labor federation in the US responded to the announcement, saying, “America’s unions will see you in court.”

Political Standoff and Funding Battle

Lawmakers from the Democratic party have refused to vote for a GOP-supported legislation to reopen the government unless it includes healthcare-centered concessions. After multiple unsuccessful votes, the Senate’s Republican leaders have adjourned the Senate until the following week, indicating the standoff is not expected to be resolved soon.

During a press conference, the Republican House speaker, Mike Johnson, criticized opposition lawmakers for rejecting the GOP proposal, which was approved in the lower chamber on a near party-line vote.

Max Stier, the head of the advocacy group, condemned the political stalemate’s effect on federal employees.

“It is wrong to make government staff suffer because our leaders in Congress and the White House have failed to keep our federal operations running,” the advocate stated. “Our air traffic controllers, VA nurses, wildland firefighters and food inspectors are not responsible for this government shutdown.”

A notable point is that lawmakers and senior White House leaders are still receiving salaries during the shutdown.
